AIMIM’s Imtiyaz Jalil Denies BJP Alliance Amid Akot Municipal Tie-Up Reports

AIMIM leader Imtiyaz Jalil has denied any alliance with the BJP in Akola. He said he was not aware of such a development and had asked local party leaders for clarification. Jalil made it clear that there would be no alliance with the BJP under any circumstances. He added that if any AIMIM leader had spoken about an alliance, strict action would be taken.

“I am not aware of this. I have asked my local leaders about it. There will be no alliance with the BJP at any cost. If any of our leaders have spoken about an alliance, action will definitely be taken against them," said Jalil.

Despite Jalil’s statement, a PTI report says the BJP has entered into post-poll alliances with the AIMIM in some municipal councils in Maharashtra. One such alliance has been formed in the Akot Municipal Council in Akola district ahead of the local body elections.

Akot Vikas Manch formed

In Akot, the BJP formed a post-poll alliance named the ‘Akot Vikas Manch’. Apart from the AIMIM, the alliance includes support from the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT), the Shiv Sena led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, the Ajit Pawar-led NCP, the Sharad Pawar-led NCP (SP), and the Prahar Janshakti Party led by Bachchu Kadu.

The Akot Municipal Council has 35 members, with elections pending for two seats. The BJP won 11 seats, while the AIMIM secured five. With the backing of other parties, the alliance claims the support of 25 councillors, giving it a clear majority in the council.

BJP councillor Maya Dhule was elected mayor, defeating AIMIM’s Firozabi Sikandar Rana. Ravi Thakur of the BJP was appointed as the group leader, and all alliance partners are bound by the party whip. The alliance was formally registered with the Akola district administration on Wednesday, ahead of the deputy mayor and committee elections scheduled for January 13.

Upcoming polls

Meanwhile, the Maharashtra State Election Commission has announced elections for 29 municipal corporations, including the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation. Polling is scheduled for January 15, 2026, with results to be declared on January 16. Nominations for these elections closed on December 30.
