Bangladesh Unrest News Live Updates: Violence Erupts In Bangladesh As Student Leader Dies

Bangladesh Violence News Today Live Updates: Bangladesh witnessed a surge of violent protests late Thursday following the death of student leader Sharif Osman Hadi, raising fears of escalating unrest as the country moves toward national elections.

Hadi, a prominent student activist who emerged during last year’s uprising that led to the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government, was critically wounded in a shooting last Friday while campaigning in Dhaka.

Masked attackers shot him in the head during the launch of his election bid. After receiving initial treatment in Bangladesh, he was transferred to Singapore, where he died after six days on life support.

In the capital, footage shared on social media showed groups of protesters damaging property, including offices linked to major newspapers such as Prothom Alo and the Daily Star. Demonstrators chanted slogans bearing Hadi’s name as tensions spread across parts of the city.

According to Reuters, several neighborhoods remained on edge late into the night, prompting authorities to deploy additional security personnel in an effort to curb further violence.

Reports also said the Awami League’s office in Rajshahi was set ablaze, while protesters vandalised the premises of Prothom Alo, one of the country’s most influential Bengali-language dailies.

Bangladesh’s interim leader, Muhammad Yunus, described Hadi’s death as a profound blow to the nation’s political and democratic life. He pledged a full and transparent investigation into the killing and appealed to the public to maintain calm amid the growing unrest.

'It's A Pattern': Former Hasina Cabinet Minister On Bangladesh Protests

Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury, a former minister in the Hasina cabinet, has called the protests over the death of Osman Hadi a pattern, adding that “it is a state-sponsored activity.”

“It is a pattern, and they have gone to the Indian High Commission for reasons none of us are aware of. What does the Indian High Commission have to do with the Hadi incident? They wanted to shut it down…The government should have been tough on them. They have not only failed, but they have also instigated them. You see a pattern where the advisors of the current government are instigating from the top and then asking the police and the army to stand still when they run their street dramas,” he said.
