Just within a span of 20 days, another Hindu youth was killed on Thursday in the Bhangadohor village of the Sunamganj district. The man, identified as Joy Mahapatro, was allegedly beaten and later poisoned by a local Muslim, named Amirul Islam, according to the family.
This is another such incident, as the minorities in Bangladesh continue to witness a surge in violence ahead of the 13th Parliamentary elections in the country. According to data released by the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council, at least 51 such incidents of violence were reported in December.
Earlier, Moni Chakraborty, a 40-year-old grocery shop owner, was murdered by unidentified attackers who struck him with a sharp weapon on Monday night at Charsindhur Bazar in Palash Upazila of Narsingdi.
The incident triggered a widespread outrage among the traders’ community. More than a hundred traders formed a human chain under the banner of the local market association, demanding the immediate identification and arrest of those responsible.
Chakraborty’s killing took place hours after another Hindu businessman, Rana Pratap Bairagi (38), was fatally shot in the head by unidentified assailants in Jessore district.
Surge in violence against minorities in B’desh
There’s been a sudden surge of targeted violence against the minority communities in Bangladesh, as country is set to hold its first Parliamentary elections since the exile of the former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
On December 18, Hindu youth Dipu Chandra Das, 25, was lynched by a mob and his body set on fire over alleged blasphemy in Mymensingh city, with the incident sparking widespread outrage and diplomatic friction in India.
The Ministry of External Affairs expressed deep concern over the barbaric killing of the Hindu youth and demanded that Bangladeshi authorities bring the perpetrators to justice.
