A Hindu man received serious injuries after he was allegedly attacked by a mob in Bangladesh and set on fire, in yet another incident that highlighted rising violence against minorities in the country.

The 50-year-old victim, identified as Khokon Das, suffered serious injuries after being attacked and set on fire in an incident that occurred on December 31 in Bangladesh’s Shariatpur district, according to reports. He was returning home when a mob allegedly intercepted him, assaulted him with sharp weapons, beat him repeatedly, and then set him ablaze.

The miscreants stabbed him multiple times with sharp weapons, poured petrol on his body and set him ablaze. However, Khokhon managed to escape by jumping in a nearby pond, but suffered serious injuries, according to a report by India Today. He was rescued by locals and rushed to Shariatpur Sadar Hospital, with doctors saying his condition is critical.

The incident came as External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar was in Dhaka to attend the funeral of former prime minister Khaleda Zia, where he handed over a letter of condolences from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Bangladesh ist Party (BNP) leader Tarique Rahman.

Bangladesh expressed its optimism for a fresh chapter in its relations with India following Jaishankar’s visit to Dhaka. The commissioner of Bangladesh to India, Riaz Hamidullah, shared on X that Bangladesh and India are “looking forward to script a new chapter in ties, in shared interests driven by pragmatism and mutual interdependence."

Violence Against Bangladeshi Hindus

As violent protests engulfed Bangladesh in the wake of youth leader Sharif Osman Hadi’s murder, Dipu Chandra Das, a young garment factory, was lynched by a mob and his body was set on fire in Mymensingh. Meanwhile, the mob that encircled him in Bhaluka, many of whom he knew, took out their smartphones to record the spectacle.

On December 24, a 29-year-old Hindu youth, Amrit Mondal, was allegedly lynched by a mob in the Hossaindanga area of Kalimohar Union. Another 40-year-old Hindu man was killed on Monday evening after being shot by a colleague inside a garment factory in Bangladesh, in what police have described as an apparent accidental firing.

According to the MEA, around 2,900 incidents of violence against minorities have been reported during the tenure of Bangladesh’s interim government.

Bangladesh, currently governed by an interim administration led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, is grappling with a volatile mix of high-stakes electoral preparation and a breakdown in law and order that has left minority communities in a state of high alarm.
