Bill Ackman, an American billionaire hedge fund manager, has donated $100,000 to the Sydney man who risked his life to disarm a gunman during a deadly shooting at a Hanukkah event in Bondi.
According to police, father and son Sajid Akram (50) and Naveed Akram (24) allegedly opened fire at the event on Sunday evening, killing 15 people and injuring dozens. The shooting reportedly lasted around five minutes, with shots fired mainly from a pedestrian bridge overlooking a car park at the northern end of Bondi Beach.
Video footage circulating online shows Sajid Akram later leaving the bridge armed with a long gun. Moments later, another clip captures Ahmed al Ahmed, a 43-year-old fruit shop owner and father of two, emerging from behind a parked car and approaching the gunman from behind before attempting to disarm him. Sajid Akram was later shot dead by police.

The act of bravery drew international attention, prompting Jewish-American hedge fund manager whose net worth is estimated at over $9.5 billion to publicly call for Ahmed to be rewarded.
Several online fundraisers were subsequently launched in Ahmed’s name. By midday Monday, one such GoFundMe campaign had raised over $306,000. The largest single donation, $99,999 was made by a donor listed as William Ackman, according to the platform.
Ahmed’s family said he remains hospitalised and is undergoing surgery after sustaining gunshot wounds to his arm and hand.
