Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Endorses Zohran Mamdani For New York Mayor

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez endorsed Zohran Mamdani for New York mayor as she said that the decision will help consolidate fractured progressive forces and block former Governor Andrew Cuomo’s comeback bid.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez told The New York Times, “Assemblymember Mamdani has demonstrated a real ability on the ground to put together a coalition of working-class New Yorkers that is strongest to lead the pack. In the final stretch of the race, we need to get very real about that."

With just weeks remaining before the June 24 Democratic primary, Andrew Cuomo holds a steady lead in the polls but Zohran Mamdani has surged to second place.

Zohran Mamdani’s platform includes free city buses, a freeze on rent hikes for rent-stabilized apartments and the establishment of city-run grocery stores- all funded by a proposed $10 billion tax on corporations and the ultra-wealthy. He has also taken a critical stance on Israel, drawing pushback from more moderate Democrats.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez emphasized the need for the progressive movement to build a broader coalition in order to defeat Andrew Cuomo, whom she criticized for being aligned with hedge funds and wealthy campaign backers.

To foster unity, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez plans to rank Adrienne Adams, the City Council Speaker, second in her endorsement list, praising Adrienne Adams’s strong connections with working-class Black and brown communities in the Bronx and Queens. Following Adrienne Adams, she will rank Brad Lander, the city comptroller, third, then Scott Stringer, former comptroller and Brooklyn State Senator Zellnor Myrie, she told the outlet.
