Ahead of Prime Minister Mark Carney’s visit to India, Canada’s federal government has said it no longer believes India is linked to violent crimes in the country, marking a significant shift in its public position, according to a report by Canadian news website Toronto Star.
The statement was made during a media briefing by a senior government official, highlighting progress in diplomatic engagement between Ottawa and New Delhi.
“We have a very robust diplomatic engagement, including between national security advisers, and I think we can say we’re confident that that activity is not continuing," a senior official said, as quoted by the Toronto Star.
The remark suggests that Canadian authorities do not see ongoing foreign interference or violent activity tied to India at present.
The development comes after a prolonged period of strained ties between the two countries. In 2023, then-prime minister Justin Trudeau had said there was “credible" evidence linking agents of the Indian government to the killing of Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia. The allegations had triggered a major diplomatic row, including the expulsion of diplomats by both sides. India has consistently rejected the charges, calling them baseless.
According to the Toronto Star report, the current assessment reflects a new tone from Ottawa as Carney prepares for his India trip. Officials indicated that enhanced dialogue, including communication between national security advisers, has helped address earlier concerns. At the same time, the Canadian government maintains that it continues to take security threats seriously.
Carney is set to travel to Mumbai and New Delhi as part of a broader diplomatic outreach. The visit is being viewed as an effort to reset relations and pursue deeper economic and strategic engagement with India, even as sensitivities around past allegations remain.
