At least one student was killed, while another was left severely injured after a shooting inside a residence hall at Kentucky State University on Tuesday.

The incident prompted an immediate shutdown of campus activities for the rest of the week. The Associated Press quoted authorities as saying that the suspect, who was taken into custody, is not enrolled at the university.

The gunfire erupted around 3 pm (local time) inside Whitney M Young Jr Hall, a student dormitory on the Frankfort campus.

Speaking at a news briefing on Tuesday evening, Scott Tracy, assistant chief of the Frankfort Police Department, stressed that officers quickly reached the scene and that the violence appeared to be an isolated incident.

According to Tracy, there were no continuing threats to anyone on university grounds after the suspect was detained.

Police did not immediately release details about the suspect’s identity or motive.

The university confirmed that one of the students struck by gunfire remains in critical but stable condition.

The institution said it is withholding the names of the victims out of respect for their families, who have been notified and are receiving support from school officials.

In an online video statement, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear called the shooting tragic but reiterated that law enforcement believed it to be an isolated event.

He urged residents to keep the affected families and students in their thoughts, adding that violence of this kind should have no place in the state or the country.

The university announced that all classes, final examinations, and campus programs are suspended for the remainder of the week.

The fall semester had been scheduled to conclude on Friday.

Students were told they may return to their homes if they wish, and the school said further guidance will be communicated as administrators continue coordinating with authorities.

Tuesday’s attack was the second shooting reported in the same area of campus in just four months.

On August 17, shots were fired from a vehicle near the same residence hall, injuring two people who authorities said were not students.

One of those victims suffered serious injuries, and the building itself sustained damage from the gunfire.

Kentucky State University, founded in 1886 as a public historically Black institution, enrols roughly 2,200 students. The campus sits a short distance from Kentucky’s Capitol building in Frankfort.
