US President Donald Trump on Tuesday made a light-hearted remark during his address at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, after discovering that the teleprompter was not working.

Trump opened his speech by telling world leaders that the teleprompter wasn’t working. “I don’t mind making this speech without a teleprompter, because the teleprompter is not working," he said.

“I feel very happy up here to be with you nevertheless, and that way you speak more from the heart," the US president added.

Trump then added with a grin, “I can only say that whoever is operating this teleprompter is in big trouble."

Trump also used the stage to criticise the United Nations itself, in a tone laced with sarcasm. “The UN has such tremendous potential. I’ve always said it — it has such tremendous, tremendous potential. But it’s not even coming close to living up to it," he said.

He went on to mock the condition of the UN headquarters in New York, even complaining about a broken escalator. “This is these are the two things I got from the United Nations, a bad escalator and a bad teleprompter," he quipped.

After the speech, Trump took to Truth Social to reflect on his UN address, even mentioning the issues with the teleprompter and escalator.

“It was a great honor to speak before the United Nations. I believe the speech was very well received. It focused very much on energy and migration/immigration. I have been talking about this for a long period of time and this Forum, was the absolute best from the standpoint of making these two important statements. I hope everybody gets to watch it!," the US President wrote.

Further, noting that the teleprompter and escalator mishaps made the speech “more interesting," he also took a subtle jab at the UN.

“The teleprompter was broken and the escalator came to a sudden hault as we were ridding up to the podium, but both of those events probably made the speech more interesting than it would have been otherwise. It is always an honor to speak at the United Nations, even if, their equipment is somewhat faulty," he added.
