As many as 89 people of Indian origin feature on a US government list categorising “criminal illegal aliens" as part of President Donald Trump’s renewed crackdown on illegal immigration, according to data released by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

The list is part of a publicly accessible database launched by the DHS that includes details of roughly 25,000 individuals arrested by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and US Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

The database identifies those convicted of serious offences, including murder, sexual crimes and drug trafficking.

The portal provides names, photographs, nationalities and criminal records of those included.

Announcing its launch on social media, the DHS said the database was created “so Americans can see the criminal illegal aliens we are arresting, their crimes, and the communities we removed them from."

Describing the data as only a partial picture, the department said the list represents “a snapshot" of arrests made under the Trump administration.

“These are the individuals who have terrorised our communities," the DHS said, adding that enforcement efforts would continue until such offenders are removed. The department said Americans should not be victimised by people who are in the country illegally.

The move comes amid a broader immigration push launched by Trump at the start of his second term.

After campaigning on a hardline immigration platform, the president signed multiple executive orders on his first day in office, including declaring a national emergency at the southern border, authorising the deployment of additional troops and pledging large-scale deportations of what he termed “criminal aliens."

However, immigration enforcement operations in several states have sparked controversy, with reports of violent confrontations drawing sharp criticism from Democrats and some Republicans.

Senate Democrats are currently blocking funding for the Department of Homeland Security, pressing for reforms to ICE and CBP, including mandatory body cameras and visible identification for federal agents.

The administration has so far resisted demands that enforcement officers be barred from wearing masks during operations.
