A day after the Pakistan government said doctors examined jailed former prime minister Imran Khan, his medical reports were officially submitted to the Chief Justice.
According to top sources, attorney general of Pakistan Mansoor Usman Awan officially submitted Imran Khan’s medical reports to Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Justice Yahya Afridi, during a meeting in his chambers.
The sources told News18 that the findings indicate that while Khan’s vital signs remain perfect for his age and range, he is suffering from significant vision impairment in one eye. As per the ophthalmological tests presented to the Supreme Court, one of his eyes is functioning at 6/6 vision but the other is only working at a capacity of 67 percent to 72 percent, they said. The report revealed that while his eyes are “working fine", he requires proper treatment and specialised medical care, they added.
They said this submission follows a Supreme Court judgment from February 12 on Khan’s medical treatment and access, with the court now likely to issue a new verdict following the latest assessments.
PTI PROTESTS ENTER FIFTH DAY
This comes as demonstrations by the supporters of Khan and his party, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), entered the fifth day.
Protesters are demanding Khan’s immediate release from custody and his transfer to a hospital for proper treatment, while holding the Shehbaz Sharif-led government and “rogue military regime" led by army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir, responsible for the former prime minister’s medical crisis in prison.
The scale of the unrest has paralysed Pakistan’s infrastructure, as PTI workers successfully blocked major highways and bridges across numerous cities. This sustained blockade has led to a massive disruption in domestic stability, with reports indicating that 50 percent of the country’s trade and communication has been choked.
Vital transportation networks have been severed, specifically cutting off major routes between the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province and capital Islamabad. Significant blockages persist on the highways linking the restive province to Punjab, with protests in cities including Peshawar, Dera Ismail Khan, Rahim Yar Khan, Swabi, Mianwali, and Abbottabad. The Attock Bridge remains a flashpoint for major blockages as the judiciary continues to review the official health assessments provided by the attorney general.
PTI REJECTS MEDICAL EXAMINATION
While the Pakistan government said Khan was examined by a team of doctors on Sunday (February 15) after a reported eyesight issue, the PTI party rejected the inspection.
A PTI lawyer visited Khan on February 12 on the directive of the SC to get a first-hand report on his living conditions. The report showed that he complained of losing about 85 percent vision in his right eye.
The court ordered authorities to carry out a detailed medical checkup of the 73-year-old former cricketing legend before February 16. Sources said a team of doctors visited him and examined the affected eye in detail.
“The medical examination went on for an hour and the team left after collecting blood samples," the sources said.
Last month, he was taken to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Islamabad and a procedure was performed on his eye. But he complained of losing vision during the meeting with the lawyer, inviting demands by his family and the PTI to allow his treatment at a private hospital.
It was indicated by government figures on February 14 that Khan will soon be taken to a hospital, but instead doctors were taken to jail to carry out the examination. His party refused to accept the latest inspection, saying without the presence of the PTI, his family and his personal doctors, the government’s stance was “deemed malicious".
“Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf categorically rejects the recent conduct of the government and jail administration regarding the medical examination of former prime minister Imran Khan’s eye in Adiala Jail. The government’s claim that a message was sent to the party leadership to arrive at the jail at the time of the examination is, in fact, a crude attempt to divert attention from the core issue," the PTI said in a post on X.
“This matter was never about the presence or absence of the party leadership. In such sensitive and delicate medical matters, the constitutional, moral, and legal right to make decisions belongs to Imran Khan’s family. And the family cannot make an informed decision until Imran Khan’s personal doctors are present during the examination. Therefore, inviting the party leadership symbolically has neither any moral rationale nor any legal justification," it added.
Khan has been in jail since August 5, 2023, when he was arrested at his Lahore residence after his conviction in a corruption case. He is incarcerated at the high-security Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi.
