US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping met on Thursday in Busan, South Korea, marking their first in-person talks in several years.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit, amid global attention on the future of US-China relations.
As the talks began, Trump greeted Xi with optimism, saying he expected “a very successful meeting."
Trump added, “We have a great relationship. Xi is a tough negotiator. We will be having some discussions, and we agree to a lot of things and will agree on more now. It’s an honour to have you."
President Xi responded warmly, expressing his pleasure at seeing Trump again.
“It feels warm seeing you again, because it’s been many years," Xi said.
“We stayed in close contact, even when we did not see eye to eye with each other," he added.
The two leaders are expected to discuss a range of strategic and economic issues, including trade, regional stability, and efforts to ease tensions between Washington and Beijing.
