November 17 marks both Sheikh Hasina's 1967 wedding to MA Wazed Miah and her 2025 death sentence for crimes against humanity, adding a personal dimension to the historic verdict

Calling the verdict "the biggest joke of 2025," Hasina, in the text-responses to News 18, alleged that the ICT has been weaponised by what she described as a "terrorist and extremist regime."(AFP)
In the life of ousted Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the date “November 17" will always hold a special place as it was on this date she got married, and after 58 years she was handed the death sentence on the same date.
Hasina was married to MA Wazed Miah, an eminent Bangladeshi physicist, on November 17, 1967.
The verdict for Hasina over “crimes against humanity" was originally planned for November 14, after finishing the trial on October 23, but the date of verdict and sentencing was later changed to November 17.
The change in dates and handing out the verdict on the same date as her marriage anniversary has garnered various reactions on social media.
“November 17 marks a significant date for Hasina, from her wedding anniversary in 1967 to her death sentence in 2025," Bangladesh’s Centrist Nation TV shared on Facebook.
Another Dhaka-based outlet, The Headlines, posted that the date added “a personal dimension to a momentous judicial decision".
“On November 17, Sheikh Hasina faced a historic verdict in her crimes against humanity case, a day that coincided with her wedding anniversary to MA Wazed Miah in 1967, adding a personal dimension to a momentous judicial decision," The Headlines posted on X.
“On the same date as her wedding anniversary, a special tribunal in Dhaka is delivering its verdict against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for alleged crimes against humanity," posted Dhaka Chronicles on Facebook.
A user on Facebook posted: “Dr Yunus is so cunning. The verdict in the case was to be delivered a few days ago, but he moved the date to November 17 because it is Hasina’s wedding anniversary."
Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser, Professor Muhammad Yunus, on Monday praised the special tribunal verdict that sentenced deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina and her former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to death, calling it a powerful reminder that “no one, regardless of power, is above the law."
The Crimes Tribunal–Bangladesh (ICT-BD) delivered the judgment in absentia, ruling that the two were responsible for “crimes against humanity" committed during last year’s student-led uprising.
