Voting has officially begun in Nepal’s first general election since Gen Z protests overturned the government in 2025. Polling stations opened at 07:00 local time (01:15 GMT) on Thursday and are scheduled to remain open for ten hours, until 17:00. Authorities have urged voters to follow rules and maintain order.
Nearly 19 million people are registered to vote, including around 800,000 first-time voters. Citizens will elect 275 members of the House of Representatives, Nepal’s lower parliamentary chamber, using a combination of first-past-the-post and proportional representation systems.
More than 3,400 candidates are standing, with over 1,000 under the age of 40.
The voting will conclude at 5 PM Nepali time. Vote counting will begin immediately after the ballot boxes are collected.
