Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri wrapped up his two-day visit to Beijing on Tuesday after holding extensive talks with several Chinese officials on the full range of India-China ties. The visit came as the two countries have stepped up bilateral engagement in recent months.
Misri's trip followed External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar's meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on the sidelines of meetings linked to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations in Manila on July 21. It also came as India and China have rolled out a series of measures over the last year to rebuild relations after a sharp downturn following the Galwan Valley clashes in 2020 and the military face-off that continued for over four years.
Earlier on Tuesday, Misri met Li Wentang, Vice President of the ruling Communist Party's Central Party School in Beijing, and discussed opportunities for future cooperation and exchanges. During the meeting, he was briefed on the school's historical significance, intellectual contributions and academic programmes, according to a social media post by the Indian embassy in Beijing. Official sources said Misri concluded his visit after meeting Li.
On Monday, the foreign secretary met Vice Foreign Minister Hua Chunying, with whom he discussed the entire gamut of bilateral relations. He also met Sun Haiyan, Vice Minister of the Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, and Hong Liang, Deputy Secretary General of the 14th Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. Hong had earlier served as Director General of the boundary department of the Chinese Foreign Ministry.
In the last few months, India and China have taken a number of steps to reset ties, including the resumption of the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra, the issuance of visas and the resumption of flight services between the two countries. Misri's visit marked the latest phase of these efforts, with discussions in Beijing covering both the broader relationship and possible future cooperation.
