Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki, a volcano on Indonesia’s Flores Island, erupted on Monday, sending an ash plume nearly 18 kilometers into the sky. This was the third time that the twin-peaked volcano erupted this year. However, no casualties or damage have been reported so far, according to authorities.

The eruption occurred at 11:05 a.m. local time, as confirmed by Indonesia’s volcanology agency. Located in a popular tourist area in eastern Indonesia, the Laki-Laki volcano stands at a height of 1,584 meters.

“An eruption of Lewotobi Laki-Laki Volcano occurred… with the observed ash column height reaching approximately 18,000 m above the summit," the volcanology agency stated. The agency further warned of the possibility of hazardous lahar floods, which is a type of mud or debris flow of volcanic materials, if heavy rain lashes the region..

This latest eruption comes weeks after its previous eruption in June, a major incident which forced the cancellation of numerous flights to and from Bali. That eruption led authorities to raise the volcano’s alert status to the highest level and expand the exclusion zone to a 7-kilometer radius. Further, villages near the volcano were evacuated after volcanic ash enveloped surrounding areas. The June ash cloud reached up to 10 kilometers.

An earlier eruption in November 2024 claimed at least nine lives and injured dozens of people. Indonesia is one of the world’s most volcanically active countries due to its location on the Pacific “Ring of Fire."

Mount Laki-Laki is paired with a taller, more dormant twin volcano, Mount Perempuan, which rises to 1,703 meters.
