Donald Trump’s top economic adviser has said that the US President will not change his stance on 50% tariffs on Indian goods unless New Delhi budges on the trade deal.
US Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett’s remark came amid backlash in the US over India tariffs, with Democrats berating Trump for singling out India while sparing other major buyers of Russian crude, including China.
“If the Indians don’t budge, I don’t think President Trump will," Hassett said while commenting on the India-US trade deal.
Meanwhile, the Democratic members of the US House Foreign Affairs Committee hit out at Trump, saying he is sabotaging the US-India relationship and hurting Americans by imposing irrational 50% tariffs on India.
“It’s almost like it’s not about Ukraine at all… Tariffing India won’t stop Putin. If Trump really wanted to address Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine, maybe punish Putin and give Ukraine the military aid it needs. Everything else is smoke and mirrors," the panel said.
