US Vice President JD Vance and his wife, second lady Usha Vance, are expecting a baby boy in late July, the couple announced in a social media post on Tuesday.
The child will be their fourth, joining their three young children — Ewan, Vivek and Mirabel. Vance, 41, and his wife, 40, said both mother and baby were doing well.
“During this exciting and hectic time, we are particularly grateful for the military doctors who take excellent care of our family and for the staff members who do so much to ensure that we can serve the country while enjoying a wonderful life with our children," the post said.
The announcement comes as Vance has, for years, made declining birth rates a central theme of his political messaging. The Republican leader has frequently argued that the US needs to encourage larger families and reverse demographic decline.
Vance first raised the issue prominently during his 2021 campaign for the US Senate from Ohio, warning that falling birth rates posed long-term risks to American society and economic strength. He has continued to press the point as vice president.
“I want more babies in the United States of America," Vance said during a March 2025 address at the annual March for Life rally.
Usha Vance has often accompanied the vice president on official overseas travel, along with their children. The family has been seen boarding Air Force Two for overnight trips, with the children frequently dressed in pyjamas.
Historically, it has been rare for senior US leaders to have children while in office. One notable exception was President Grover Cleveland, whose wife, Frances Cleveland, gave birth to their second child in 1893 during his second term in the White House.
The Vances’ announcement places the vice president among a small group of top US officials to welcome a child while serving in office.
