US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer is in New Delhi for talks with Piyush Goyal on the interim trade deal. The visit is meant to close outstanding issues before the first phase of the broader bilateral pact.
US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer is visiting India this week to take forward discussions on the interim trade deal that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump agreed on in February. He is scheduled to meet Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and other senior Indian officials as part of the broader talks on the proposed US-India Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA).
Announcing the visit on Sunday, the Office of the US Trade Representative said, "This week, Ambassador Jamieson Greer will travel to New Delhi, India, to meet with the Minister of Commerce and Industry of India, Piyush Goyal, and other senior Indian officials to discuss the historic US-India joint statement and the interim agreement as part of the broader US-India Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) negotiations."
The visit comes soon after negotiator-level discussions on the pact were held in New Delhi from June 2 to 4. Earlier, Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal had said that talks between the two ministers were expected to focus on giving final touches to the framework deal. On June 5, Goyal said India and the US were moving towards closing all the open ends of the interim trade agreement, and that both sides were likely to execute the "very, very vibrant" first phase of the BTA by the middle of next month.
Trump and Modi had also met on the sidelines of the G7 meeting in France last week, where the US president said India and the US were very close to finalising the trade agreement. Trump also called Modi a tough negotiator and spoke about the personal rapport he shared with the Indian prime minister.
After his India visit, Greer will travel to Uzbekistan, where he will meet President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, Head of the Presidential Administration Saida Mirziyoyeva, and Deputy Prime Minister Jamshid Khodjaev. The US Trade Representative's office said those discussions would focus on achieving fair, balanced and reciprocal trade with the US. Overall, Greer's India visit is aimed at pushing forward the interim trade deal as both sides work towards the first phase of the broader bilateral agreement.
