US missions across West Asia advised American nationals to exercise heightened vigilance. The warning reflects widening risks from Houthi attacks and US-Iran tensions.

US missions across West Asia issued a security alert on Sunday, advising American nationals to “exercise heightened vigilance” amid Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia and the possibility of Iran and its allies targeting US interests, the Press Trust of India reported.
The advisory warned travellers about possible flight cancellations, airspace closures and other disruptions as fighting in the region could escalate rapidly.
“Be aware of potential flight cancellations, airspace closures, and travel disruptions,” the advisory said, adding that “the hostilities have the potential to escalate rapidly beyond that immediate area.”
“Iran and groups supportive of Iran may target other US interests overseas or at locations associated with the United States and Americans throughout the world, including US businesses and other institutions,” it said.
The alert followed drone and missile attacks by Yemen's Houthis on Saudi Arabia. These included an October 10 strike on King Khalid Airport in Riyadh that killed 13 people, including an Indian national, according to PTI.
The US considers the Houthis a key Iran-backed armed group in Tehran's regional network. Iran provides the group with weapons, funding and training, although the Houthis retain considerable independence in their operations.
US citizens travelling to or from West Asia were advised to monitor updates on airport and airline operations and prepare contingency plans. The US embassy in Jerusalem also issued a list of steps to be taken and details of possible emergency assistance.
Fighting in Yemen escalated sharply in October after the collapse of an informal ceasefire that had lasted several years. The Houthis subsequently launched major cross-border drone and missile attacks deep inside Saudi Arabia.
Yemen's civil war began in 2014 when the Houthis seized the capital, Sanaa, and forced the internationally recognised government to move to Aden. Saudi Arabia led a military coalition into Yemen in March 2015 to support the government and push back the Houthis, leading to years of fighting and air strikes.
A United Nations-brokered truce in 2022 brought a period of relative calm, followed by talks between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis aimed at reaching a lasting settlement. However, the ceasefire was not formalised through a comprehensive peace agreement.
The renewed Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia have added another regional element to the continuing US-Iran conflict and raised the risk of hostilities spreading beyond the direct confrontation between Washington and Tehran.
The US-Iran conflict, which began in February, remains in a military and diplomatic stalemate after a June agreement collapsed. Iran continues to restrict shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, while the US maintains its naval blockade of Tehran's ports.
In summary, US missions have urged American nationals across West Asia to remain vigilant and prepare for travel disruptions as Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia and tensions between the US and Iran heighten security concerns in the region.
