Ukraine drone strikes kill 12 in Moscow region and Russia's Black Sea coast

Ukrainian drone attacks in the Moscow region and on Russia's Black Sea coast killed at least 12 people, Russian officials said on Tuesday, while Ukrainian authorities said Russian aerial strikes had also killed at least five civilians in different parts of Ukraine. Neither side's claims could be independently verified.

The exchanges came as the war, now more than four years since Russia's invasion, continued with long-range drone and air attacks far from the front line. The battlefield stretches about 1,250 kilometres through eastern and southern Ukraine, but neither side publishes verifiable numbers of troop casualties.

In Russia, regional authorities said the death toll from a drone strike on Monday in the Black Sea resort of Arkhipo-Osipovka had risen to seven, including three children. On Tuesday morning, authorities in Krasnodar updated the number of wounded to 58, with 21 hospitalised. Footage circulating online showed a drone slamming into a crowded beach, with what sounded like rapid gunfire in the background. Ukraine has not commented on the strike.

Another Ukrainian drone attack in the Moscow region, which surrounds but does not include the Russian capital, killed five people and wounded 10 others on Tuesday morning, Governor Andrei Vorobyov said. He said most of the damage was in the Chekhov municipal district, where several fires broke out in the Novoselki industrial zone. Russia's Defence Ministry said its air defences shot down 320 Ukrainian drones overnight. In the latest in a series of attacks on Russia's biggest online retailer, Wildberries said its warehouse in the Leningrad region, next to St Petersburg, was on fire. In the Tver region, between Moscow and St Petersburg, drone debris caused 'partial' damage to a wall of a Wildberries warehouse in the village of Emmaus, Governor Vitaly Korolyov said.

Russia's Defence Ministry said on Tuesday that its forces the previous night had 'continued to strike Ukrainian ports, vessels, and port infrastructure' used by Kyiv's army. It said that in Chornomorsk, in Ukraine's southern Odesa region, Russian forces struck an automobile components plant and a port terminal where Ukrainian forces 'were repairing military vehicles and storing ammunition and fuel'. The ministry also said a bulk carrier with military cargo was damaged in the southern port of Mykolaiv, while another ship unloading military cargo was hit in Pivdennyi. It added that two bulk carriers carrying weapons and military equipment to Ukrainian ports were damaged at sea south of Odesa.

Ukraine, meanwhile, said Russian attacks on Mykolaiv, including its port, killed an 89-year-old woman and wounded seven others aged between two and 83. In the southern Odesa region, a Russian strike on civilian infrastructure destroyed a private home and wounded two people, according to regional military administration head Oleh Kiper. In the northern Sumy region, six Russian glide bombs killed three people, including two girls aged five and 10 and an elderly woman, regional military administration head Oleh Hryhorov said. In the Kharkiv region, Russian forces struck the city of Kharkiv and 18 towns and villages over the previous 24 hours, killing one person and injuring seven others, including an eight-year-old child, according to regional military administration head Oleh Syniehubov.

The latest attacks underlined the widening reach of strikes by both sides, with Ukrainian drones hitting areas around Moscow, St Petersburg and the Black Sea coast, and Russian attacks targeting Ukrainian ports, towns and cities while causing more civilian deaths.
