US President Donald Trump has unintentionally grabbed global headlines—not for his stance on tariffs, but for a glaring typo in an official letter to the leader of Bosnia and Herzegovina that has sparked a meme fest on social media.

The letter, intended to notify the Bosnian President of US tariff changes, contained a rather unflattering slip-up as Trump referred to the Bosnian leader as “Mr President" instead of “Madam President". He then deleted the original post and later shared a corrected letter that began with “Dear Madam President".

For those hoping to see Trump’s economic acumen shine through, this was a sharp detour. While the letter was likely meant to signal a serious shift in trade policies, it instead sparked mockery and comparisons to elementary school mistakes.

BREAKING: The trade letters Trump sent out were done in such a sloppy and haphazard way that he misgendered the President of Bosnia and Herzegovina. You can’t expect world leaders to take you seriously when you can’t even get their gender right. pic.twitter.com/a71VyCZ4Zc— Trump Lie Tracker (Commentary) (@MAGALieTracker) July 7, 2025

Social media quickly pounced on the mistake, with some users humorously likening Trump’s blunder to a fifth-grade spelling test mishap. Critics were not so sparing. They claimed that such a mistake—made during an important international communication—reflected poorly on his leadership, casting a shadow over what should have been a powerful diplomatic message.

To make matters worse, it wasn’t just one typo. The letter also exhibited other glaring mistakes, such as awkward phrasing, poor grammar, and a general lack of professionalism. The internet immediately took off with memes and jokes, showcasing everything from Trump’s apparent “disrespect" to the international community to how easily something as simple as typing a name correctly can backfire in such a high-stakes context.

A user said they observed “so many grammatical errors in this letter, it would not pass a first-year English class". Another added: “Trump’s tariff letters to Japan and SK are a mess: random CAPS, no polish, pure chaos. Looks like a teen’s rant or junior staffer’s first draft, not a White House diplomatic document."

This wasn’t the first time Trump’s letters have come under fire for their tone and errors. His team had already received backlash for similar missteps, including improper addresses to world leaders and questionable formatting. But this recent misstep seemed particularly jarring because it involved mis-gendering a world leader at a time when diplomatic precision is more crucial than ever.

TRUMP’S TARIFFS

Trump said Tuesday that he would not extend an August 1 deadline for higher US tariffs to take effect on dozens of economies, while announcing plans for a separate 50 percent duty on copper imports.

Trump also said Washington would soon make an announcement on pharmaceuticals, but officials would allow manufacturers time to relocate their operations into the country.

Beyond tariffs impacting sectors, Trump also slapped a sweeping 10 percent tariff on goods from almost all trading partners in April.

These would have swiftly risen to steeper levels for dozens of economies including the European Union and Japan, but Trump paused their implementation until July 9.

The president this week again delayed their reimposition, pushing it to August 1 while insisting that “no extensions will be granted."
