Typhoon Noul nears Guangdong, Hong Kong cancels 150-plus flights

Typhoon Noul is bringing strong winds and heavy rain to southern China and Hong Kong over the weekend, prompting widespread alerts and travel disruption. More than 150 flights scheduled for Saturday and Sunday have been cancelled at Hong Kong airport.

Hong Kong's Observatory said Noul had intensified, with maximum sustained winds of 140 kph near its centre. It was moving steadily across the northeastern part of the South China Sea on Saturday and edging closer to the coast of eastern Guangdong.

The observatory said the typhoon could make landfall on Sunday morning near the southern Chinese cities of Huizhou and Shanwei, and bring strong winds and squally showers to parts of the region. China's Meteorological Centre, however, said it expected Noul to make landfall between late Saturday and early Sunday.

In Hong Kong, part of a large scaffolding on a high-rise building collapsed on Saturday afternoon as the storm approached, local police said. Initial reports indicated there were no injuries.

China's weather authorities said parts of southeastern Guangdong and the southern coast of Fujian were expected to receive heavy rain over the weekend. Local media reported that more than 20,000 people had been evacuated in Guangdong by late Friday, while the China News Service said train services in the province had been cancelled for Sunday.

Taiwan's Central Weather Administration said Noul was bringing rain to parts of southern and eastern Taiwan. It said the storm was passing over waters south of Taiwan and was moving away from the island on Saturday.

Earlier this month, Typhoon Bavi brought strong winds and rain to eastern China and led to the evacuation of more than 2 million people after making landfall on July 11. Another typhoon, Maysak, made landfall in southern China on July 3. Overall, Noul has put parts of southern China, Hong Kong and nearby areas on alert, with authorities monitoring its approach as wind, rain and transport disruption continue.
