Days after blowing up the Shewa Bridge in North Waziristan, which was used by the Pakistan military for troop movement and logistics, the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has now warned against efforts to rebuild it, local sources told News18. Meanwhile, the TTP blew up another bridge in Khushhali in Mir Ali Tehsil of North Waziristan on Saturday night.

“As a result of the explosion, the bridge suffered severe damage, which affected the movement of the local population. After Shewa Bridge, which was blown up on last Wednesday, this is second consecutive attack on strategic assets of Pakistan," said intelligence sources.

“This is TTP’s massive winter offensive to paralyse Pakistan military’s movement in tribal areas. The supply lines and communication has been cut off," they added.

Shewa bridge rebuilding efforts

Locals in North Waziristan’s Shewa say their jirga — a traditional assembly or council of respected elders convened to resolve disputes in Pashtun culture — met with TTP leaders in the area, who admitted to blowing up the Shewa bridge used by the Pakistan Army.

According to a jirga member, militants admitted that they planned this IED blast seven months ago.

“TTP fighters have threatened the local jirga, warning they will target anyone who tries to rebuild the bridge," they said.

Why Shewa bridge was key

Last Wednesday, the TTP blew up the strategic bridge in Waziristan. It was a key route for Pakistan security forces’ supply chain in tribal areas and the Durand Line and the main route for military deployments in tribal areas and Pak-Afghan border’s checkpoints.

The Shewa bridge was connecting the Shewa Tehsil (North Waziristan) connects Kurram (N), Hangu (NE/E), Bannu (E/SE), Karak (SE), South Waziristan (S), and borders Afghanistan to the west.

The Pakistan security forces are conducting multiple operations in Khyber-Pakhtunkhawa on a daily basis, said sources. “Lack of connectivity will create problems for Pakistan military in the north and south Waziristan districts. Pakistan is already facing huge challenges on the escalating Durand Line and now Shewa bridge collapse will put all military operations in huge trouble," said sources.
