Trump-Zelenskyy Meeting in Washington Live Updates: US President Donald Trump will host Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and several European leaders at the White House on Monday in yet another attempt to bring the Russia-Ukraine war to an end.

Today’s gathering of world leaders has become more of a summit, just three days after US President Donald Trump held crucial and historic talks with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, in Alaska.

Leaders who will participate in the meeting with Trump today include those from the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Finland, the European Union, and NATO. They will present their ideas to the US President on how the three-year-old war should end and on what conditions.

The presence of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, UK PM Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Italian PM Giorgia Meloni, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, and other leaders in Washington DC, is also an attempt to ensure Zelenskyy does not get humiliated by Trump again, the way it happened on February 28 this year at the Oval Office.

It is a reflection of how high the stakes are among European leaders, who fear that Trump has once again shifted his stance less favourable to Ukraine after open support in the recent past. This comes as Trump warned Zelenskyy on Sunday that he must relinquish hopes to join the NATO military alliance and should be ready to concede Crimea, annexed by Russia in 2014.

Trump-Zelenskyy Meeting Live Updates: Trump 'Rewarding' Putin For Not Meeting His Own Ceasefire Deadline, Says Analyst

US President Donald Trump is rewarding his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, rather than punishing him, for failing to meet the US’ deadline for agreeing to a ceasefire.

“It’s profoundly disconcerting what’s happened in the past two weeks. Trump has completely abandoned his demand for a rapid ceasefire, and his threat to impose sanctions, and is increasingly taking Putin’s view that instead the war (in Ukraine) can only be ended by a ‘comprehensive settlement.’” Nigel Gould-Davies, senior fellow for Russia and Eurasia at the Institute for Strategic Studies, told CNN.

Trump-Zelenskyy Meeting Live Updates: What Is Donbas?

Donbas is a region in eastern Ukraine that comprises two regions — Donetsk and Luhansk. They were an industrial powerhouse in the Soviet era, rich in coal mines and steel mills, along with rich farmland, key rivers and a coastline on the Sea of Azov.

It was in this region that Russia put in efforts to “destabilise” Ukraine in 2014 after it annexed Crimea.

Pro-Russian militia came up in the region and quickly took over the cities of Luhansk and Donetsk.

For nearly 8 years, the enclaves witnessed fighting, sometimes fierce, between the Russian-backed separatists and Ukrainian forces.

The Ukrainian data claimed that over 14,000 people died in the region, CNN reported.

Trump-Zelenskyy Meeting Live Updates: No Russian Representative In White House Today

There will be no Russian representative at the White House when the European leaders meet Trump today.

However, it may not matter as it appeared that Putin had enough impact on the US President in Alaska meeting that Russians would be confident their point of view would be adequately represented, BBC reported.

Trump has already asked Zelenskyy to leave out his wish to join the NATO — something which Russia has long wanted. Moscow also wants full control over the Donbas, which would mean that Kyiv has to give up the land it still controls in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions.

Trump-Zelenskyy Meeting Live Updates: Ukrainians Want Talks To Focus On Security Guarantees, Not Concessions, Says MP
