President Donald Trump signalled renewed pressure on Kyiv on Wednesday, saying Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy “has to be realistic" about the ongoing war and questioning when Ukraine intends to hold its next elections. His remarks came after separate calls with the leaders of France, Germany and the United Kingdom, during which he said Ukraine was discussed “in pretty strong terms."

Trump told reporters that the European leaders are seeking a joint meeting with the United States and Ukraine as early as this weekend. “They would like to have a meeting this weekend with both of us, and we’ll make a determination depending on what they come back with," he said.

The comments follow days of Trump publicly urging Zelenskyy to engage with a proposed peace plan aimed at ending the conflict that began with Russia’s 2022 invasion. Speaking during a Q&A session, Trump reiterated that Kyiv may need to reassess its position. “I think he has to be realistic," he said, adding that he continues to wonder “how long is it going to be until they have an election?"

The White House has not yet confirmed whether the United States will participate in the meeting requested by European leaders.
