Trump lashed out at reports that he suffered a "major defeat" during the Alaska summit with Putin, after the meeting ended without a deal on the Ukraine war.

US President Donald Trump reacted sharply against “fake news" for claiming that he had suffered a “major defeat" in his closely-watched Alaska summit last week with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Trump had welcomed Putin with a red carpet and a warm handshake, before they climbed into the back seat of the US President’s limousine. After holding talks in Alaska for nearly three hours, Trump and Putin left without announcing any deal or any specific areas where they made progress, while describing the talks as productive.

Putin said the leaders reached an agreement to “pave the path towards peace in Ukraine", but Trump said “there’s no deal until there’s a deal". The meeting ended with Putin inviting Trump to Moscow.

Taking to X, Trump said, “The Fake News has been saying for 3 days that I suffered a “major defeat" by allowing President Vladimir Putin of Russia to have a major Summit in the United States. Actually, he would have loved doing the meeting anywhere else but the US, and the Fake News knows this."

“It was a major point of contention! If we had the Summit elsewhere, the Democrat run and controlled media would have said what a terrible thing THAT was," he added.

He also criticised Democrats, claiming they wanted crime in cities under their control. “These people are sick! They even want CRIME IN DC, and other BLUE Cities throughout our Country, but don’t worry, I won’t let that happen. Just like our now secure Southern Border (ZERO illegals in last 3 months!), our cities will be Secure and Safe, and DC will lead the way!"

Trump described the meeting with Russian President Putin as “really well", and said he held a telephonic conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, several European leaders, and NATO Secretary General, during which it was agreed that a peace agreement is the best way to end the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

The Alaska summit was widely seen as a major victory for Putin, who was ostracised by the West for years before he stepped onto American soil for the first time in a decade, welcomed by US fighter jets, a red carpet and Trump’s limousine. He also departed Alaska without making any concessions while maintaining a warm rapport with Trump.

While Trump did not manage to get a ceasefire, Putin publicly stated during a joint press conference that the war would not have happened if he was the president in 2022, instead of Joe Biden. Trump will now meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Monday, who had expressed displeasure about the meeting.
