President Trump returns to CBS’ “60 Minutes” after settling a $16 million lawsuit over its Kamala Harris interview, signalling improved ties with the network under new CEO David Ellison.
For the first time since settling his lawsuit against CBS’ flagship news programme, US President Donald Trump is returning to “60 Minutes” this weekend, a move that signals a possible thaw in his rocky relationship with the network.
Trump sat down with CBS anchor Norah O’Donnell on Friday at Mar-a-Lago, his Florida estate. The interview will air on Sunday, marking his first appearance on the long-running newsmagazine since the legal battle over its 2024 campaign coverage.
NEW INTERVIEW, NEW OWNERSHIP
Trump’s history with “60 Minutes” has been anything but smooth. He’s publicly sparred with the programme’s journalists in the past, accusing CBS of bias and deceptive editing during his 2024 presidential campaign.
But this time, the tone appears different. The president has signalled warmer ties with CBS News, following a major corporate shakeup at its parent company, Paramount Global, now led by David Ellison, the son of billionaire Trump supporter Larry Ellison.
Ellison took control earlier this year after his Skydance Media merged with Paramount Global in an $8.4 billion deal, reshaping the media conglomerate and its news division.
LAWSUIT SETTLED
The renewed appearance comes months after Paramount agreed to pay $16 million to settle a lawsuit Trump filed against CBS last year. The complaint alleged that “60 Minutes” manipulated an interview with then–Democratic nominee Kamala Harris, misleading viewers during the heat of the campaign.
While neither side admitted wrongdoing, the settlement ended months of back-and-forth between Trump’s legal team and CBS executives.
Earlier this month, Paramount Skydance named journalist Bari Weiss as editor-in-chief of CBS News, part of a broader effort to diversify the network’s editorial voice. Weiss, who previously founded the independent outlet The Free Press, joined CBS as part of Paramount’s acquisition of her news platform.
Her arrival and Ellison’s influence have fuelled speculation that CBS News could shift toward a more centrist editorial tone, potentially mending its strained relationship with conservative audiences.
