US President Donald Trump is holding a high-stakes meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House on Monday, with the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war as the main agenda. Zelenskyy is joined by several key European allies in what is being seen as a major diplomatic effort to build consensus on resolving the conflict.
Ahead of a joint press conference, Trump posed for a formal group photo with the attending world leaders in the Cross Hall of the White House, referred to as a “family photo." The group included French President Emmanuel Macron, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
While posing for the picture, Trump took a moment to direct attention to a framed photograph hanging in the Cross Hall. The image captured the moment of an assassination attempt against him during a campaign rally last year. “It was not a good day, that was not a great day," Trump said, pointing toward the image.
The incident he referred to occurred on July 13, 2024, during an election rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. A 20-year-old gunman grazed Trump’s ear with a bullet before being fatally shot by Secret Service agents. One rally attendee was killed, and two others were injured in the chaos. The gunman was later identified as Thomas Matthew Crooks.
On the anniversary of the attempted assassination last month, US Vice President JD Vance called the moment “the most iconic" he has ever witnessed in American politics.
Monday’s meeting comes just days after President Trump met with Russian President Vladimir Putin on August 15 to assess Moscow’s position on potential peace talks. Trump has described his latest diplomatic efforts as part of a broader initiative to bring an end to the war, which began in February 2022 following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
rump has consistently criticised former President Joe Biden, blaming him for the escalation of tensions between Russia and Ukraine. He has repeatedly vowed to end ongoing wars and broker peace deals, claiming that the conflict would have never occurred under his leadership.
