US President Donald Trump on Wednesday declared that he had “won the war on the climate change hoax," citing recent comments from billionaire philanthropist Bill Gates.
The claim came hours after Gates published a memo suggesting that while global warming would have serious consequences, it would not lead to the collapse of civilisation. Trump, long known for dismissing climate change as a “liberal hoax," portrayed Gates’s remarks as a vindication of his controversial stance.
What Trump said?
In his Truth Social post, Trump declared, “I (WE!) just won the War on the Climate Change Hoax. Bill Gates has finally admitted that he was completely WRONG on the issue. It took courage to do so, and for that we are all grateful."
The Republican leader has repeatedly dismissed climate change as a “liberal hoax" and a “con job." Since returning to the White House in January after his 2024 election victory, Trump has rolled back multiple green policies reinstated under the Biden administration. These include environmental protections, emissions standards, and clean energy incentives. His campaign reportedly received hundreds of millions of dollars from major fossil fuel donors, reinforcing his pro-industry stance.
What Bill Gates said?
In a lengthy memo published earlier this week, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates argued that while climate change poses a “serious" threat, it “will not lead to humanity’s demise." Gates wrote, “People will be able to live and thrive in most places on Earth for the foreseeable future."
He emphasised that addressing global health and poverty would strengthen resilience to the changing climate, particularly in developing nations. Gates also acknowledged the criticism he often faces for his personal carbon footprint, saying that some might view his position as “a sneaky way of arguing that we shouldn’t take climate change seriously."
However, he pointed to notable progress in reducing global emissions and expressed optimism about technological innovations such as carbon capture, renewable energy storage, and sustainable agriculture.
