SC's Fury Over Digital Arrests: Scammers Impersonate Judges, Defraud Seniors of Crores!

The Supreme Court of India has taken suo motu cognizance of the rising menace of 'digital arrest' scams targeting citizens, particularly the elderly. The court's action was prompted by a complaint from a senior citizen couple in Ambala who were defrauded of their life savings. The apex court stated that 'forging court orders signatures of judges to digitally arrest innocent people strikes a trust and faith of people in judicial institutions.' Scammers, posing as CBI, tax, and judicial officials, used forged court orders and seals to extort over a crore of rupees from the victims. Taking serious note of this being a direct assault on the judicial system, the court has issued notices to the Home Ministry, the CBI, and the Haryana government, seeking a status report and coordinated pan-India action to tackle this organised criminal activity. The court has also requested the assistance of the Attorney General in the matter.
