Charlie Kirk, a conservative activist and close ally of Donald Trump who was assassinated at a college event, was a "true patriot" loved and admired by all, the US President said, reacting to the death of the 31-year-old right-wing political figure.
Highlighting Kirk's significance in American political circles, Trump described him as "a truly Great American Patriot" and ordered all American flags to be flown at half-mast in his honour until Sunday evening.
"The Great, and even Legendary, Charlie Kirk, is dead. No one understood or connected with the youth of the United States of America better than Charlie. He was loved and admired by ALL, especially me, and now he is no longer with us. Melania and I send our deepest sympathies to his beautiful wife Erika and family. Charlie, we love you!" Trump wrote on Truth Social.
