Moments later, as Monteiro turns to look at her son, he pulls the trigger. The bullet strikes her in the chest and arm. In the video, she initially appears to survive the shot, standing up in shock and inspecting her wounds. The toddler, clearly startled, drops the weapon and runs toward her.
Monteiro follows her son briefly before collapsing to the ground. Her husband is then seen trying desperately to assist her. Tragically, she died at the scene.
Police have confirmed that the gun belonged to Monteiro’s husband, a farmer, who held a legal licence for the weapon. He has been arrested on suspicion of negligence and will face manslaughter charges. However, he will remain free during the course of the investigation.
Meanwhile, the matter of the child’s custody remains unclear, and it is not yet known whether local social services will step in to take over his care.
