External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Thursday, January 8, stated that India and Europe have “tremendous unrealised potential", highlighting that there are many areas to explore. At the same time, Jaishankar underscored that the fact that the world is moving in a multipolar direction demands a deeper collaboration among those who are “like-minded".

He also affirmed that the ties between India and Europe are “poised to grow to the next level".

The minister made the remarks while addressing the media alongside Polish Deputy PM Radoslaw Sikorski, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot and German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul post the India-Weimar meeting.

“Europe and India’s relationship is really poised to grow, grow to the next level… I think there is a larger discussion today that the world needs about the global order", he said.

S Jaishankar’s remarks come in the face of heightened tensions in the geopolitical environment following the US military operation in Venezuela to capture President Nicolas Maduro.

“Among India’s major relationships, I believe that the one with the European Union and Europe, and obviously with its member states, has the most room to grow today. We have tremendous unrealised potential and many new areas to explore. It is appropriate that this format, which has brought us together, has three very important European partners. My discussions today leave me confident that they will support that effort to take India-Europe ties to the next level", Jaishankar said.

Calling for a deeper collaboration between those “like-minded", the minister stated, “At the end of the day, the world is moving in a multipolar direction. Factors and events that make it more volatile and uncertain also make a powerful argument for deeper collaboration among those who are like-minded, those who share convergence, and those who share views. That is the exercise that has brought us together…"

The comments also come amid New Delhi’s strained ties with Washington over a steep 50 per cent tariff against Indian goods.

S Jaishankar, who is on an official visit to France, attended the first India-Weimar format meeting along with Polish Deputy PM Radoslaw Sikorski, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot and German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul.

The meeting revolved around three key issues, including the Russia-Ukraine conflict, India-European Union ties, and the Indo-Pacific.
