Without explicitly naming any party, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said political rivals who are finding it challenging to counter the BJP-led government are now misusing technology to spread fake videos on social media.

He made these remarks at an election rally in Karad of western Maharashtra’s Satara district. This comes after BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya last week alleged that the Telangana Congress wing was spreading an edited video of Shah, “which is completely fake and has the potential to cause large-scale violence.”

The Prime Minister spoke of the emergence of fake videos in created using artificial intelligence, and asked people to remain vigilant and report any instances of fake videos to the authorities. “These people are making fake videos in my voice, which is creating danger. If you see any fake video, inform the police,” he said. There is a plan to create a big incident in next one month, Modi claimed. “It is our responsibility to save the society from such fake videos. I want to request EC to take stern action against those behind such fake videos,” he said.

PM Modi’s veiled jibe at Congress comes after the Special Cell of the Delhi Police on Sunday registered an FIR after the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C) filed a complaint about the doctored video of Shah. Earlier in the day, the Delhi Police asked Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy to join the probe on May 1 concerning Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s doctored video being circulated.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma informed on Monday that state Police arrested a man in connection with the fake ‘ending reservation’ video involving the Home Minister. The accused has been identified as Reetom Singh and he is reportedly the War Room Coordinator of the Assam Congress unit, the police said. He is charged with posting edited videos and abusive content on social media.
