Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday launched a scathing attack on the Congress party, accusing it of divisive politics, corruption in defence deals, and neglect of the Northeast.

While addressing a gathering in Assam’s Guwahati, PM Modi said that while the Muslim League divided India during Independence, “today, Congress has become Muslim League–Maoist Congress and is in the process of dividing India."

He further referred to the 2019 Pulwama terror attack and paid tributes to the security personnel who lost their lives. While emphasising on Operation Sindoor, India’s response to the Pahalgam terror attack, he said that India has since demonstrated its resolve in responding to terror threats.

“You have seen recently in Operation Sindoor," he said, referring to India’s security response, adding that such action would not have been possible under a Congress government.

“Today is Pulwama anniversary. I pay my respect to the deceased. India has since shown how to respond. You have seen recently in Op Sindoor. But could you expect it from the Congress which refuses to acknowledge India as a nation?" he said.

The Prime Minister further alleged that the Congress government “couldn’t make an arms deal without corruption," contrasting it with what he described as transparent governance under the BJP-led NDA.

Further praising the BJP’s organisational strength, he said that the credit for this goes to workers of the BJP. “All of you BJP workers are the lifeblood and oxygen of the BJP. Our workers work tirelessly to the utmost, and because of that, the BJP progresses… I proudly say that if I have any greatest qualification, the most proud moment in my life, it is that I am a worker of BJP," he said.

Highlighting the Union Budget allocations, PM Modi said that Assam would receive Rs 50,000 crore as its tax share this year.

“The budget focuses heavily on making the Northeast economically self-reliant. This year, Assam will receive approximately Rs 50,000 crore as its tax share… We should remember well how Assam was left starving during the Congress government. During the Congress regime, Assam received only Rs 10,000 crore as its tax share. Now, under the BJP government, Assam is receiving 5 times more money than it did under the Congress government," he said.

He claimed that over the past 11 years, Assam has received more than Rs 5.5 lakh crore from the Centre for various development projects. The Prime Minister said the latest budget focuses heavily on improving connectivity and economic self-reliance in the Northeast, which he described as “Goddess Ashtalakshmi."

Thousands of crores have been allocated for highways and road projects in Assam, he said, adding that improved connectivity would boost employment and tourism.

Referring to a recent interaction with students during the Pariksha Pe Charcha programme in Guwahati, PM Modi spoke about promoting river tourism on the Brahmaputra.

“There is no better place for tourism. Come, this is my Assam, this is my Brahmaputra," he said.

He also noted a recent aircraft landing on the Moran highway, calling it a historic moment that demonstrated infrastructure development in the state.

He also paid tribute to Kabirendra Purkayastha, who was recently honoured with a Padma Award. He said more than 125 personalities from the Northeast have received Padma Awards since 2014.

“Maa Kamakhya has been very kind to Assam, its people, the country, and its fellow citizens. With her blessings, Assam has given many children who have championed the nation’s defense, independence, and advancement of the nation’s culture," he said.

“Today, I salute one such great child, Kabirendra Purkayastha. He dedicated his entire life to serving Assam and society. In recognition of this contribution, the BJP-NDA government has been honored to honor him with the Padma Award…. Since 2014, more than 125 great personalities from the Northeast have received Padma Awards… This very potential of the Northeast is now a major foundation for a developed India," he added.
