One teenager was killed and six others injured in a shooting in Indianapolis, police said, just a day after the city marked Independence Day. The gunfire broke out around 1:27 a.m. local time while officers were responding to a disturbance in the area, Deputy Police Chief Tanya Terry said.
The deceased was pronounced dead at the scene while six victims were taken to hospital. Three of the injured- including the person killed- were juveniles. Police said multiple firearms were recovered and about seven people were detained for questioning. Roughly 20 arrests were made over the course of the night, authorities added.
Indianapolis Police Chief Chris Bailey called the violence “unacceptable" and criticized the growing number of unsupervised minors gathering downtown at night.
“A kid is dead tonight," Chris Bailey said, adding, “We are not your children’s keeper. You are."
Police also said one minor was found with an assault rifle tucked into the front of his pants.
An investigation into the shooting is underway, authorities said.
