Amid the ongoing tensions between Israel and Iran, the United Kingdom has started repositioning military assets to the Middle East for what Prime Minister Keir Starmer described as “contingency support."

Starmer confirmed on Saturday that Britain was “moving assets to the region, including jets", while speaking to reporters travelling with him on his flight to Canada for the G7 talks.

The UK Defence Ministry later specified that the aircraft were Eurofighter Typhoon jets, supported by additional refuelling planes deployed from UK bases.

Israel–Iran Conflict And UK presence In Region

There is already a significant RAF presence in the region under Operation Shader, Britain’s contribution to the international coalition against the Islamic State. RAF Typhoons previously assisted in shooting down drones launched by Iran towards Israel in April 2024, an operation confirmed by former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

While Starmer did not speculate on the UK’s direct involvement in the current escalation, he acknowledged the growing risks. Iran has issued warnings to Western powers, including the UK, against intervening in its conflict with Israel.

Significant UK Bases Across The Middle East

According to the BBC, the Typhoon jets will likely be based at RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus, the UK’s largest airbase in the area. RAF Akrotiri handles aircraft refuelling, intelligence gathering and supply operations. The RAF also operates from Al Udeid in Qatar, Al Minhad in the UAE and Al Musannah in Oman. The Royal Navy keeps vessels at its support facility in Bahrain and at Duqm port in Oman. Two British Army battalions are stationed in Cyprus, while nearly 200 personnel are deployed in Iraq on stability‑support duties.

UK PM Starmer Underlines Commitment To De-escalation Efforts

Prime Minister Starmer underlined his commitment to de-escalation efforts, saying, “Stability in the Middle East will be a priority at the G7." He added that the UK had updated its travel advice for British nationals in Israel and was coordinating closely with global partners on the unfolding crisis.

“I’m working with other world leaders on how we de-escalate the situation."

As tensions continue to rise between Israel and Iran, the UK’s strategy of enhancing military preparedness alongside diplomatic engagement is likely to draw global attention.
