A day after some Shiv Sena leaders reportedly expressed their concerns over political poaching, Maharashtra deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde met the BJP top brass, including president JP Nadda and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, in New Delhi on Wednesday.
According to sources, Shinde highlighted his concerns over Mahayuti unity ahead of the civic polls and “some leaders" are trying to undermine the prospects of the ruling alliance especially amid the favourable atmosphere created after the NDA’s sweeping victory in Bihar.
Some Sena ministers reportedly skipped the weekly state cabinet meeting on Tuesday (November 18) in protest of recent defections from their party to the BJP in Kalyan-Dombivli. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis addressed the issue and is said to have warned the alliance partners regarding the rules of political poaching and instructed that they must abide by them going forward and not induct each other’s workers.
Amid these tensions, Shinde took his concerns directly to the central leadership, the sources said. During his meeting with Nadda and Shah, he expressed concern over internal actions jeopardising the alliance’s momentum, they said.
They said he highlighted that “some leaders are trying to spoil this atmosphere", which is inadvertently giving the opposition an “undeserved advantage". This atmosphere of internal discord is leading to “unnecessary and misleading reports…appearing in the media, creating confusion among the public" while causing “disorder among party workers and office-bearers", they added.
Shinde warned that such behavior “could create needless obstacles in the alliance’s winning momentum", they said. He stressed the need to curb self-serving behaviour, noting that “some leaders are acting out of personal interest, and we must ensure that such behavior does not continue", they added.
He reportedly stressed that leaders within the alliance “should also avoid criticising each other", and are expected to “maintain restraint and adopt a harmonious approach" while making statements. The meeting served as a powerful projection of unity aimed at ensuring the Mahayuti alliance comprising the BJP, Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, and Ajit Pawar-led NCP.
