A Russian drone strike killed three Nova Poshta drivers in Sumy as Romania downed another drone crossing its airspace. The back-to-back incidents highlight fears of a wider assault and the war's spillover beyond Ukraine.

Three people were killed in a Russian drone strike in Ukraine's northeastern Sumy region on Saturday, local officials said, as attacks continued in different parts of the country. On the same day, Romania said it shot down a drone after it entered the country's airspace, marking the second such incident in two days.
The developments came a day after a major Russian attack on a site near Kyiv that was hosting a defence industry event killed at least 10 people and injured nearly 100 others. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said late on Friday that intelligence assessments suggested Russia was preparing missiles for a large attack on Ukraine and that there were indications this could happen in the next 48 hours.
Sumy regional head Oleh Hryhorov said a large fire broke out after a drone struck a "civilian facility". He said the three people killed were drivers for the private Ukrainian postal and courier service Nova Poshta.
In southeastern Ukraine, Zaporizhzhia regional head Ivan Fedorov said a Russian drone attack on Friday night hit a shopping centre. The strike caused a fire that spread over 500 square metres and left several people injured.
Romania's defence ministry said on Saturday that its forces "safely shot down" a drone that breached its airspace in an "unpopulated area" near the border with Ukraine. In a Facebook post, Romanian President Nicuor Dan said the drone was "shot down by a Romanian pilot from an F-16 aircraft." On Friday, another drone was shot down near Padina, northeast of Bucharest.
Drone incursions linked to the war have affected Romania and other NATO members since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. In June, a Ukrainian maritime drone being used in the war exploded at the Black Sea port of Constanta, while three other sea drones exploded outside the port, though no one was hurt. A month earlier, a Russian drone involved in an attack on Ukraine went off course and hit an apartment building in eastern Romania, injuring two people. The latest incidents underlined the continuing impact of the war inside Ukraine and along its borders.
