An Indian-origin former nurse has been found guilty of killing an Australian woman, nearly seven years after her body was recovered from an isolated beach in Queensland.
On October 22, 2018, Toyah Cordingley, a 24-year-old animal shelter volunteer, was found half-buried in sand dunes at Wangetti Beach, about 40 km north of Cairns. Authorities said the accused, Rajwinder Singh (41), had gone to the beach following an argument with his wife, carrying fruits and a kitchen knife.
Cordingley, who was walking her dog at the time, reportedly confronted Singh after her dog barked at him, leading to an altercation. In a fit of anger, Singh allegedly stabbed her and buried her body in the sand. He also tied her dog to a tree.
As the Cairns Supreme Court jury delivered the guilty verdict, Cordingley’s father shouted at Singh, “Rot in hell, you bas****." Singh, however, appeared calm.
Singh fled Australia two days after the murder, abandoning his job, wife, and three children, claiming he needed to care for an ailing grandfather. He remained at large for four years, avoiding contact with his family. Police quickly identified him as a suspect by matching his car’s movements with Cordingley’s mobile phone location.
Queensland Police had offered a A$1 million reward—the largest in the department’s history—for information leading to Singh’s capture. In November 2022, he was arrested by the Special Cell of Delhi Police at a gurudwara in Delhi and was extradited to Australia in 2023.
The trial, originally set for 2024, faced delays due to missing documents. One juror was removed over allegations of bias, but the remaining panel was deemed impartial.
Arguments for Singh’s sentencing are scheduled for Tuesday, marking the next stage in the long-running case.
