A group of thieves dressed as Robin Hood raided a food store in Montreal on Tuesday night, stealing groceries and redistributing them to community fridges in what they described as a protest against soaring food prices.

The activist collective, calling itself Robins des Ruelles (Robins of the Alleys), said around 60 people, some wearing feathered caps reminiscent of the legendary outlaw, entered a Rachelle Béry health food store, took food without paying, and later donated the items across the city. The group termed the action a “political act" aimed at highlighting food inflation and corporate profits.

The raid comes just weeks after the same group staged a similar protest in December, when members dressed as Santa Claus and his elves stormed a Montreal grocery store, stole food, and left some of it gift-wrapped beneath a nearby Christmas tree.

The cost-of-living crisis remains a flashpoint in Canada. Food inflation rose 4.7% between November 2024 and November 2025, more than double the rate of overall inflation, according to CBC.

“Every day, we work relentlessly just to afford food from profit-driven supermarkets," the group said in a statement attributed to a member named Francis. “When having two jobs isn’t enough to eat, keep a roof over your head and care for your family, every means becomes legitimate."

An edited video released by Les Soulèvements du Fleuve on Instagram shows masked participants moving through store aisles, taking food, medicine, soap and other essentials. The footage is intercut with title cards from the 1938 film The Adventures of Robin Hood. The video also shows individuals spray-painting over security cameras inside and outside the store. One wall was later defaced with the message “F**k Les Profits."

Montreal police confirmed they have opened an investigation into the theft and related graffiti. “No one was injured, and no arrests have been made so far," said police media relations officer Jean-Pierre Brabant. Authorities have not yet recovered the stolen goods.

While police could not provide an exact figure for the losses, Brabant estimated the value at “thousands of dollars," aligning with the group’s own claims. He added that the December Christmas-themed theft remains under investigation, with no arrests to date.
