Tesla Boss Elon Musk on Saturday, January 3, said that his brain-computer interface company Neuralink can possibly restore full body functionality.
“I am confident at this point that restoring full body functionality is possible with Neuralink", Musk shared in a post on ‘X’.
In a video post, he continued, “Neuralink can essentially help bridge communications from the cortex, past the point in the neck or spine, where are nerves are damaged. It is possible from a physics standpoint to physically restore full body functionality".
Pertinent to note that the motor cortex technology was announced by Elon Musk in 2022, and the trials began on humans in the same year.
According to the details outlined on the company’s website, the device includes a chip that can replace a small piece of bone and is connected to the brain via a series of thin, threaded, electrodes.
“Our brain-computer interface translates neural signals into actions. In our clinical trials, people are using Neuralink devices to control computers and robotic arms with their thoughts", says the official website of the company.
It also emphasizes that the technology will restore autonomy to those with unmet medical needs, unlocking new dimensions of human potential.
In September, the Musk-led company announced that it had implanted its device in 12 patients.
Major steps towards restoring vision
On January 1, Elon Musk’s California-based neurotechnology firm announced that it was headed to taking major steps towards restoring vision, even in those blind from birth.
Blindsight, Neuralink’s brain chip aimed at restoring vision, received “breakthrough device" designation from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in September, marking a major milestone in its efforts towards restoring vision.
According to Musk, Blindsight will help people who have lost both their eyes. He also claimed that the device can help even those blind from birth.
