Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke to US President Donald Trump on Saturday over a phone call, congratulating him on his 79th birthday and the occasion of Flag Day, according to Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov.

The two leaders also recalled the common history of their respective countries during the Second World War, with Putin reportedly highlighting the “spirit of wartime brotherhood" between the US and the Soviet Union.

The conversation was confirmed by Ushakov, who told Russian media that the phone call was held on June 14.

The leaders held a 50-minute phone call, he further added where and said that both leaders exchanged views on a range of global flashpoints.

According to Kremlin, Putin informed his American about his recent phone calls with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Trump, for his part, called the situation in the region “highly alarming."

“The dangerous escalation in the Middle East was of course at the centre of the exchange," the Kremlin said, after Israel on Friday bombarded Iran, prompting Iran to launch strikes at Israel in return.

The Russian president also reminded Trump of Moscow’s proposal to revive talks and seek “mutually acceptable agreements" on the Iranian nuclear issue. Both leaders agreed that returning to the negotiating table remained possible.

On Ukraine, Putin briefed Trump about the implementation of agreements reached at the June 2 talks in Istanbul. He said Russia remained open to continuing negotiations with the Ukrainian side.
