Russian President Vladimir Putin held a phone call with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Tuesday, his second conversation with him in a week, and urged a quick de-escalation in Tehran’s conflict with the United States and Israel.

The Kremlin’s press office said that during the conversation between Putin and Pezeshkian, “discussions were resumed on the situation in the Middle East in connection with the Israeli-US aggression against Iran." FOLLOW LIVE UPDATES

Putin “confirmed his principled position in favour of the earliest possible de-escalation of the conflict and its resolution through political means", as per the Kremlin. Their last conversation took place on March 6, days after the US-Israeli strikes that killed Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

This conversation also takes place after Putin has held a phone conversation with US President Donald Trump on Monday, according to Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov. The conversation lasted an hour and focused on the Iran conflict and the trilateral talks between the US, Russia and Ukraine aimed at settling the Ukraine conflict.

Putin called for a “quick political and diplomatic settlement" to the US-Israeli war against Iran, which has been a key Russian ally. He also “positively evaluated the mediation efforts undertaken" by Trump in the Ukraine conflict, as per the Kremlin aide.

Earlier on Monday, Putin said the Iran war had triggered a global energy crisis and that Russia was ready to work again with European customers if they wanted to return to long-term cooperation. He also warned that oil production dependent on transport through the Strait of Hormuz could soon come to a halt.

“We will continue to supply energy resources to countries that are reliable partners. Russian companies need to take advantage of the current situation," said Putin at a televised meeting with government officials and the heads of Russia’s leading oil and gas producers.

Russia has condemned the US and Israeli bombing campaign against Iran as a “premeditated and unprovoked act of aggression." Putin described the killing of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei as a “cynical violation" of morality and international law.
