Two men and a woman have been arrested in Essex on suspicion of assisting the Russian intelligence service, the Metropolitan police said. The suspects- men aged 41 and 46 and a 35-year-old woman- were detained at two separate addresses in Grays, Essex. They were arrested on suspicion of assisting a foreign intelligence service and taken to a London police station for questioning.

In a statement, the Met confirmed, “The country to which the allegations relate is Russia."

‘Proxies’ For Foreign Agencies

Head of the Met’s counter-terrorism command said, as per Guardian, that the arrests reflected wider trends in espionage investigations. He said, “Through our recent national security casework, we’re seeing an increasing number of who we would describe as ‘proxies’ being recruited by foreign intelligence services."

All three suspects have since been bailed pending further inquiries.

The police said it would not disclose the nationalities of those arrested. The investigation is being led by specialist counter-terrorism and national security officers.
