Pakistan’s alleged atrocities continue in occupied Kashmir, with riots, shelling and aerial firing in Muzaffarabad.
Students staged protests over rising university fees and de-merit in intermediate exams, following which the Pakistani government banned student unions and political activities at University of Azad Jammu & Kashmir.
India, meanwhile, condemned Pakistan’s human rights violations, top government sources told News18. New Delhi said the suppression of student unions, arbitrary arrests, and violent crackdowns expose the complete absence of civil liberties, as per the sources.
Kashmiri students are reportedly chanting slogans against Pakistan and its military. Intermediate FA and FSc students, on the other hand, hold protests against the exam board over its “e-marking" policy that affects at least 10,000 students.
The police have attempted to control the situation, but the situation remains tense. The Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee (JKJAAC) is likely to raise the issue.
According to top government sources, India has strongly condemned Pakistan’s actions saying they expose the complete absence of civil liberties. Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK) faces economic stagnation, corruption, and mismanagement, now reflected in university fee hikes and exam manipulation, the sources said. The student unrest and chants against the Pakistani Army in Muzaffarabad show a deeper rebellion against Islamabad’s control, they added.
PoK came under the country’s control after its tribal militias, backed by the army, invaded the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir on October 22, 1947, leading to the first Indo-Pak war. The region remains under Pakistan’s illegal occupation, divided into “Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir" and “Pakistan-occupied Gilgit Baltistan (PoGB)."
Despite lacking constitutional rights or representation, the people face political suppression, censorship, forced disappearances, and restrictions on freedom of speech and movement. Human rights organisations have reported systematic abuses, including curbs on media, denial of fundamental rights, exploitation of natural resources, and persecution of pro-independence voices.
