PM Modi Notes ‘Steady Progress’ In China Ties In Meeting With Yi, Accepts Xi’s SCO Invite

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday accepted Chinese President Xi Jinping’s invitation to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Tianjin later this year, as he met Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in New Delhi and highlighting that peace and tranquillity on the border as a prerequisite for better relations.

During the meeting, Wang Yi, who is also a member of the Communist Party of China’s Politburo, handed over a personal message and invitation from President Xi. He conveyed his positive assessment of talks with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Security Adviser Ajit Doval during his visit.

The Prime Minister emphasised that India remains committed to a fair, reasonable and mutually acceptable resolution of the boundary question, underlining that peace on the border is essential for stable bilateral ties.

Modi welcomed what he described as “steady and positive progress" in ties since his meeting with President Xi in Kazan last year, citing developments such as the resumption of the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra.

“Glad to meet Foreign Minister Wang Yi. Since my meeting with President Xi in Kazan last year, India-China relations have made steady progress guided by respect for each other’s interests and sensitivities. I look forward to our next meeting in Tianjin on the sidelines of the SCO Summit. Stable, predictable, constructive ties between India and China will contribute significantly to regional as well as global peace and prosperity," the Prime Minister said in a post on social media platform X after his meeting.

He also thanked President Xi for the invitation to the SCO Summit and conveyed his acceptance, expressing support for China’s presidency of the forum.
