Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan was taken to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) on Tuesday for a scheduled follow-up eye procedure, where doctors administered the second dose of an anti-VEGF intravitreal injection.

According to a press statement issued by the Executive Director of PIMS, Khan was brought to the hospital for continued treatment of his eye condition. Before the procedure, he underwent a detailed medical evaluation by a board of specialists, including a consultant cardiologist and a consultant physician.

Hospital officials stated that the cardiologist performed an echocardiography and electrocardiogram (ECG), both of which returned normal results. “Mr. Imran Khan was found to be clinically stable prior to the procedure," the statement said.

After informed consent was obtained, the anti-VEGF injection was administered under microscopic guidance in the operation theatre. The procedure was carried out by a consultant ophthalmologist and a consultant vitreo-retinal surgeon from PIMS, in collaboration with specialists from Al Shifa Eye Hospital. It was performed as a day-care surgery under standard monitoring and precautionary protocols.

The hospital said Khan remained vitally stable before, during, and after the procedure. He was later discharged with care instructions, follow-up advice, and relevant medical documentation. PIMS authorities reiterated that the former premier is “fine and fit" and responded well to the treatment.

Imran Khan has been incarcerated since 2023 following multiple convictions and ongoing legal proceedings. His party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has repeatedly alleged political victimisation and demanded improved prison conditions and medical access for its leader.

Khan, who has been embroiled in multiple legal cases since his ouster from office in 2022, has remained a central and polarising figure in Pakistan’s political landscape. His sisters have accused the “Asim Munir regime" of wanting to “kill" the jailed cricketer-turned-politician, and alleged that they have received threats from interior minister and PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi. Alleging a “lethal conspiracy" by the Pakistani government and military to eliminate Imran Khan in custody, his sisters—Dr Uzma Khan and Aleema Khan—specifically named army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir and Mohsin Naqvi as being part of such a plan.
