Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir left for Switzerland early Sunday to take part in technical-level talks linked to the US-Iran accord, according to the prime minister's office. The discussions in Burgenstock are being held as a follow-up to the signing of the Islamabad MoU.
Pakistan had earlier said the talks would take place in Switzerland after they were postponed on Friday. The discussions are aimed at working out key details of the preliminary accord signed earlier this week by US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian to halt the nearly four-month war between the US and Iran.
In a statement issued after midnight, the PMO said, "The prime minister, along with a high-level delegation, has departed from Islamabad for Switzerland." It added that Prime Minister Sharif and Field Marshal Munir will participate in the talks.
US Vice President J D Vance had initially been due to hold a first round of talks with senior Iranian officials on Friday at a mountainside resort in the Swiss village of Obburgen. However, the Iranian side cancelled its plans to attend because of escalating fighting between Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah in Lebanon.
According to US and regional officials, who were not authorised to comment publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity, negotiators from the US and Qatar, with help from Iran, later worked out an agreement between Israel and Hezbollah to calm the hostilities. Iran's state media then said on Saturday that its top officials would travel to Switzerland. Vance left for Switzerland on Saturday evening, as Iranian state television showed video of Iran's negotiators arriving there. The Iranian delegation is led by parliamentary Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf and includes Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi as well as central bank and oil officials.
The Switzerland meeting follows the postponement of the first round of talks and brings together Pakistani, American and Iranian participation as efforts continue to firm up the details of the preliminary US-Iran accord.
